Digitalization of the National Institute of Industrial Property

As of January 29, all documents of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI) will be digital, which will make it the first public body to eliminate paper, thanks to the implementation of advanced electronic signature on all documents that it generates and by the obligation that all users will have to present only digital documents for registration procedures of trademarks and patents.

During 2012, INAPI had already begun to apply the electronic signature system in titles and certificates, gradually adding resolutions, certificates and daily statements, in order to achieve the complete elimination of paperwork, in addition to offering its users the option to access the electronic display of trademark and patent files that are in process.

This process of eliminating paper will begin on January 8 as a pilot project that will run until January 29, the date from which all the procedures of the agency will only be digital.

Among the advantages that the program possesses, it stands out the decrease of the expenses related to authentic or certified copies for its users, as well as the increase of the security in the files, minimizing the risk of loss of these and, in addition, the streamlining of the deadlines for reply and notification of resolutions, being also friendly with the environment and the costs of INAPI, by eliminating the use of supplies related to printing and physical storage of documents.

Thanks to the saving of space, INAPI will install a public access intellectual property library and a Technology and Innovation Support Center, with the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization.
